Free Companies (or Grandes Compagnies) were formed between the 12th and 15th centuries from unemployed soldiers after truces, operating independently of governments. They sold their services to the highest bidder and lived off the land or were supported by tradesmen aligning to the company for protection. Companies became highly organized businesses, with corporals, marshals, and treasurers handling logistics and legalities.
